This is the article I was talking about at the meeting today:
On the face of it, this concept of a three dimensional web sounds like a solution looking for a problem. How many times have you thought, “Yeah, this website would be great in 3D”. The answer is probably never. Still, there’s an exciting and interesting idea buried in here.
The success of Second Life shows us that people are interested in investing real time and energy in this sort of environment. There is almost nothing to do in Second Life but talk to other people. Also interesting, people have started actually building games inside of Second Life, Michael mentioned Tetringo at the meeting. Another project used the virtual environment to brainstorm on new ideas for refurbishing a public park.
Other things are happening that fit well with the idea of a 3D web, Wired recently ran an artice that posited the idea of merging the games spaces of several games. Providing one unified 3D environment would lower the barrier to entry on creating these kinds of immersive multi-player games and would make it easy to move the same character or avatar from game to game.
Both personal computers, video cards, and the bandwidth have finally reached the level where these kinds of ideas aren’t far-fetched.
